Planning for the Copperton Projects began several years prior to 2026, as part of the Midcontinent Independent System Operator's (MISO) Long-Range Transmission Planning (LRTP) process. The specific segment for Michigan, known as Project 32, was approved by the MISO Board of Directors in December 2024 as part of the larger LRTP Tranche 2.1.
The planning was initiated to address several critical grid needs:
Grid Reliability and Resilience: To strengthen the electric transmission system, reduce the risk of blackouts, and improve resilience against extreme weather.
Renewable Energy Integration: To enable the integration of cheaper renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, which are currently hindered by transmission limitations.
Growing Demand: To accommodate increasing electricity demand driven by factors such as data center development, electric vehicle ...
