Pope Francis—born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the first Latin‑American and first Jesuit to lead the Catholic Church—died at 7:35 a.m. on April 21 in his Casa Santa Marta residence, aged 88, after complications from double pneumonia; Cardinal Kevin Farrell announced nine days of mourning will begin tomorrow, and the cardinals will gather in early May to elect his successor.
